History and Legend
According to local tradition, Hidimba, a powerful figure described in the Mahabharata tradition, lived in the hills of Chitradurga. During the Pandavas’ exile, Bhima encountered and defeated Hidimba. The surrounding rocky landscape is traditionally connected with this legendary encounter.
Historical records of Chitradurga also mention Hidimbeshwara among the principal temples situated inside the fort. The temple complex contains objects traditionally associated with the Hidimba and Bhima legends, including a large iron structure identified locally as Bhima’s drum (bheri).
