The Upper Bhadra Project continues to be an important development for drought-prone areas of central Karnataka, including several parts of Chitradurga district.
A major aqueduct near Gonur is being constructed as part of the project. The structure is approximately 1.94 km long and about 120 feet high, and has been described as Karnataka’s tallest aqueduct.
The project is intended to help convey water towards lakes and irrigation systems serving areas including Chitradurga, Molakalmuru, Hosadurga and other surrounding regions. Earlier experimental water releases had also helped fill a number of lakes in the region.
The project is being closely watched by farmers because improved water availability could support irrigation and reduce dependence on uncertain rainfall.
